Nottingham: English Universities 8-Ball Championships
Nottingham University have announced that the 5th edition of their Universities 8-Ball Championships will be taking place on the 8th-9th November (sat-sun). This event is seen as the traditional warm-up to the BUCS 8-Ball event in Yarmouth next February and provides a great chance for seasoned players get much needed match practice early on in the year, as well as providing newcomers with their first taste of nationwide competitive pool. This year the event is split into a northern and southern section and they're expecting around 16 universities to particiapte in the northern tournament. And though the pool of universities is smaller, strong teams such as Manchester, Warwick, Lancaster, Durham, Edge Hill and of course Nottingham will all be in attendance. Though there is a highly competitive nature about the tournaments, the competition really does serve as a great way to get to know people from other uni's, as well as having a laugh with members of the club, particularly as after play finishes, its very likely we'll go for a food, drinks and maybe even a night out.
The format consists of an individual and team event. Individuals is a straight knockout and will have prize money for those reaching the latter rounds. The Team event is likely to be split into groups of 3 or 4 depending on the number of particpants, with top placed teams qualifing into the main tournament, and the bottom placed teams qualifying into a lesser tournament.
Teams consist of 5 people, and we will be wanting to take 2 teams to the event, possibly 3 depending of interest. With inevitable new additions to the club, the only way of determining who will make up these teams will be through trials. And with many members on a very similar level the chance of a place is as open as its ever been. These trials are likely to held around 3rd week but more details will follow nearer the time. Regarding the layout of the weekend, we will be leaving either on the friday night or saturday morning depending on what people would prefer. We will be staying in a hostel/hotel, then heading back to york on sunday evening.
The last few years have provided some great memories, none more potent than the much depleted 2nd team providing the comeback of the tournament 2 years ago. York 2nds needed a draw in the final match to qualify, but found themseles 5-1 down in the final game to a very strong Plymouth 1sts side. All looked lost but a stunning fightback saw them win 4 in a row to draw 5-5 and go through. All was in vain however as they drew York 1sts and unfortunately fell to a 6-0 defeat. The 1sts lost out in the Quarter-Finals to eventual champions, the hosts Nottingham.
We've been one of the strongest teams in the past few years, and so with some competitive practice sessions and of course a bit of luck, hopefully we can continue this success in Nottingham, and for the rest of the year. COME ON YORK!!
